What Is the Difference Between a Safety Light Curtain and a Safety Light Grid?

Sep 3,2024
Safety light curtains and safety light grids have many similarities in function and purpose, but there are also some key differences. Here are their main differences:
Definition and Principle of Safety Light Curtain and Safety Light Grid
Safety Light Curtain
Safety light curtain:
A safety light curtain is a photoelectric protection device, usually composed of a row of transmitters and receivers. The transmitter emits multiple infrared beams to form a safety light curtain. When an object (such as a human body) enters the light curtain area, the beam is blocked, and the receiver senses the interruption of the beam and triggers a shutdown or other safety mechanism to prevent danger.

Safety light grid:
The principle of safety light grid is similar to that of safety light curtain, and it also protects the dangerous area by emitting and receiving light beams. However, safety light grid usually refers to horizontally arranged light beams with larger spacing, which are mainly used to monitor larger objects entering the dangerous area.
Application Scenarios of Safety Light Curtains and Safety Light Grids
Safety light curtain:
Often used to protect people's safety, especially in applications that require detailed detection, such as detecting fingers and palms entering dangerous areas. Suitable for high-precision industrial equipment, such as punching machines, robotic arms, and other equipment that requires close operation by personnel.

Safety light grid:
Mostly used to detect large objects or parts of the body entering dangerous areas. Suitable occasions include large machinery and equipment, automated production lines, and areas where it is necessary to detect whether large objects enter or pass through.
Application Scenarios of Safety Light Curtains and Safety Light Grids
Beam Density of Safety Light Curtains and Safety Light Grids
Safety light curtains:
Beam Density Is Usually High, The Spacing Between Beams Is Small, And Can Detect Smaller Objects or Body Parts.

Safety light grids:
Beam Density Is Usually Low, The Spacing Between Beams Is Large, And Mainly Detect Larger Objects or Body Parts.
Detection Accuracy of Safety Light Curtains and Safety Light Grids
Safety light curtain:
Higher detection accuracy, suitable for occasions that require meticulous protection, can detect smaller parts such as fingers and palms.

Safety light grids:
Lower detection accuracy, suitable for detecting larger objects or people entering, cannot detect smaller objects or body parts.
Application of Safety Light Curtains and Safety Light Grids
Safety light curtain:
Widely used in places with extremely high safety requirements, such as industrial robot areas, precision machinery operations, automated assembly lines, etc.

Safety light grids:
Usually used to detect and protect relatively large areas, such as warehousing, logistics conveyor lines, around large equipment, etc.
Standards and Certifications for Safety Light Curtains and Safety Light Grids
Safety light curtain:
Generally need to comply with higher international safety standards, such as ISO 13849-1 and IEC 61496, to ensure safety in human-machine collaborative environments.

Safety light grids:
The standards may be similar to those of safety light curtains, but the requirements may be relatively loose, depending on the risk level of the application scenario.
