What is a Safety Edge? Working Principle and Application of Industrial Safety Edge

Aug 19,2024
Industrial safety edge sensor prevent people and objects from being harmed by sensing external pressure or impact and generating a signal output that triggers appropriate safety protection measures. Its unique working principle and a wide range of application scenarios make it an indispensable safety protection device in the field of industrial automation and machining.
Definition and Structure of Safety Edge
Resistive Safety Edge
Definition: A safety edge, also known as a sensing edge or safety edge switch, is a rubberized band-shaped pressure-sensitive devices. It usually consists of a soft, bendable band containing sensors or switching devices that can be fixed to the edges of moving parts where there is a risk of crushing and shearing.
CONSTRUCTION: The safety contact edge typically consists of an aluminum rail and a safety contact strip. The safety contact strip is a flexible, bendable strip containing sensors or switching devices; the aluminum rail is used to support and fix the safety contact strip, while ensuring its close contact with the moving part.
Working Principle of Safety Edge
Sensing pressure or impact: When the safety contact edge is subjected to external pressure or impact, e.g. contacted by a person, object or collision, the sensor or switching device inside will immediately sense the change. This sensing can be achieved by the triggering of a mechanical switch or a change in signal from an electronic sensor.
Generating a signal output: Once a sensor or switching device senses external pressure or impact, it quickly generates a signal output. This signal is electrical and is used to trigger subsequent safety protection measures.
Triggering of safety measures: The signal generated by the safety edge is usually connected to the control system or safety device. When the control system or safety device receives this signal, it will immediately execute the corresponding actions, such as stopping the movement of the equipment, cutting off the power supply, etc., to ensure the safety of personnel and objects.
Safety Edge Application Scenario
Security Sensing Edge Application
Because of its unique working principle, safety edge sensor is widely used in various occasions that need to prevent collision, extrusion or shear danger. For example:
Industrial machinery: such as lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, etc., where workers need to be prevented from coming into contact with rotating or moving parts during processing.
Conveyor belts and lines: where workers need to be protected from entrapment or entanglement during material transfer.
Robots and automation equipment: In the work area of robots or automation equipment, prevent collisions between people and equipment.
Revolving doors and sliding doors in commercial establishments: to prevent personnel from being injured due to accidental collisions.
Amusement rides: such as roller coasters and merry-go-rounds, etc., provide safety protection around the equipment.

The safety edge and the corresponding safety relay constitute a control area. Each control unit may be a safety edge or multiple safety edges connected in series to form a control area. It is possible to connect up to several safety edges in series. Please note that the maximum length of a control area (including link cables) should not exceed 100 meters.
Precautions of Safety Edge
The installation of safety edge switch should be customized according to the characteristics and safety needs of specific equipment to ensure that they can effectively provide safety protection. The selection and installation of safety edges should follow relevant safety standards and codes to ensure their reliability and stability. Regular inspection and maintenance of safety edge to ensure that they are in good working condition is an important part of ensuring safety.
