2D LiDAR: Solution to Vehicle Detection and Monitoring in Drive-Thru Services

What is Drive-Thru Service?

Drive-Thru is a business model that allows customers to complete transactions or receive services without leaving their vehicles.
The implementation scenarios for drive-thru services are diverse, including government agencies, banks, fast-food restaurants, motels, and more. This service model utilizes technological means, such as artificial intelligence and automation, to improve service efficiency and customer experience.

Common Technology Challenges

Drive-thru services require reliable vehicle detection technology to notify employees when a customer has arrived at the window, count the number of vehicles passing through, monitor the time taken for the drive-thru service, and so on.

A common technology used is inductive loops. Among the available market options, inductive loop vehicle detectors are one of the most common devices. However, they have a significant drawback: they require complex installation with the need for trenching and wiring, are difficult to maintain, are highly influenced by road surface quality, and environmental changes and coil aging can affect detection accuracy.

Therefore, we recommend an alternative solution:
2D LiDAR is another technology that can be used for drive-thru vehicle detection. The LD-20D laser radar sensor is based on Time-of-Flight (TOF) technology, which directly measures the time taken by a light pulse to travel to an object and back. The product emits modulated near-infrared light, which reflects off objects. The sensor then calculates the time delay (or time of flight) between the emission and reception of the light to determine the distance to the target object, generating depth information.

The laser radar is installed on an overhanging part of the drive-thru area. When the laser radar detects a vehicle entering the pre-set alarm zone, it sends a signal to the staff to alert them of the vehicle’s presence, ensuring timely service and minimizing customer wait time.
In addition to triggering signals for customer presence, laser radar sensors can also count the number of vehicles passing through the drive-thru lane each day, providing merchants with data on peak service times and demand trends. This data not only helps merchants make more accurate staffing decisions but also aids in the continuous optimization of service processes to better meet customer needs.
